Stairlift Guide

Many companies will have you believe that a cornered staircase means you must have a curved stairlift. This is not the case! On occasion there is no other choice but to install a curved stairlift in a property, but this is dependent on both the configuration of your stairs and more importantly, the person that will be using the lift.

Fanned Staircases:

With a fanned staircase it is more than likely that a curved stairlift will be needed. Some companies will offer to install a platform that can come down to fill the gap making it possible to install a straight stairlift on a fanned stairs but it is likely that this will soon stop as national regulations come in to ban platforms on safety grounds.

Quarter Landing:

Quarter landings are rather different from fanned staircases. With a quarter landing you have a choice. You can opt for a single curved stairlift or you can fit two straight stairlifts (usually the cheaper option). If you have a quarter landing near the top or bottom of your stairs with say two or three steps on the shorter run then you can opt to have only one straight stairlift for the longer section and the user can walk the remaining two or three steps. This is where the user aspect comes into the decision. Can I manage two or three stairs? It is important to remember that if you have a deteriorating condition then even if you can manage those three steps now, will you manage in a year or two? When you have a quarter landing and are considering a stairlift the most important this to remember is that the choice is always yours!
